I drove up into the stone driveway, my car tires crushing small pebbles under the wheels. I pushed my white Fendi sunglasses up onto my head, pushing my bangs back with them, and I smiled. I noticed the light on upstairs in one of the bedrooms as the twilight crept in, the sky darkening a shade every few moments. I stared up at the window for a few moments, the light lavender curtains filtering the light slightly, giving it a purple tinge. I knew I was home.
I turned the key, shutting my engine off, along with turning the lights off, and then grabbed my duffel bag of clothing from the last week out of the seat next to me. I grabbed my cell phone out of its personal place on the dashboard, and looked for any missed calls, though I’d said goodbye to Reap in Vegas, giving him my number and asking him to pop by sometime soon. Very soon.
I opened my car door and climbed out of it, placing the bag’s strap over my shoulder, and then shut the door. The horn beeped twice as I clicked the button to alarm the car, and began to walk up to the house. I toyed with my key ring, finding the key to unlock the front door as I reached the steps up to the door.
I smiled as I unlocked the door, turning the key leftwards, and then out of the keyhole, and opened the door quietly. I dropped my bag quietly near the front door, and then took off my pink rhinestone flip-flops, leaving them by the shoe rack. I peeked upstairs, where Brooke’s bedroom was, seeing the light still on, and I smiled.
I walked over to the foot of the stairs, walking up them very quietly, wanting to surprise her. I smiled as I got to the top of the stairs, and walked over to her dark wooden door, peering through the small crack she’d left in it.
I opened it slowly, and walked into the room. She was putting her purple pajama shorts and her black cami on. I tapped her on the shoulder lightly, and she jumped, a startled scream coming from her lips. I giggled as she turned around.
”Why’d you jump? You knew I’d be home tonight.”
”YOU SCARED THE SHIT OUT OF ME!”
I giggled at her startled expression, and extended my arms out for a hug. She laughed after calming down, and hugged me back, a wide grin on her face. I scrunched my nose up and stared at her, trying to figure out what she was trying not to laugh about. I was extremely lost.
”What’s so funny!?”
”Anna has a boyfriend! Anna has a boyfriend!"
I rolled my eyes and sighed at her teasing. She had always acted like a five-year-old. How could I expect any different from her now? She’d always been like this; I knew it wouldn’t change overnight…though sometimes I wished it would. Brooke was Brooke. I was stuck with her now, after being with her since the ninth-grade, it would be difficult to tell her to get lost. Impossible, most likely.
”How mature of you Brooke. Would you like me to assign you a bedtime and find your color-by-numbers book, too?”
She shot me a warning glance, and then stuck her tongue out at me. I just shook my head, deciding not to even comment on the lack of maturity she had at the moment. I sat down onto her bed, crossing my legs and watching her as she moved around her room, doing her routine for the night.
I looked around the room, happy that I was back. I’d missed the whole house, especially my room and hers. It was so weird traveling again, though AWS had finally become my professional home, I’d never quite get over the homesickness I felt every time I had to leave for another show. Especially without Brooke. It was easier when she was my partner, with her along for every show, every tour. But now that she’d stopped wrestling, deciding that she didn’t belong in the limelight, I missed having her around.
She smiled at me, and then sat next to me, smiling at me and hugging me again. I giggled and hugged her back, before pulling away from her and standing up. I noticed her bottom lip jut out.
”Where are you going now!?”
”Uhm, my bedroom, to get into my pajamas. I’d like to be able to sleep in my own bed comfortably tonight. And comfort means pajamas, not hip hugger jeans and a pink tank top.”
She scowled, and I silently laughed at her. I knew I’d get yelled at for it later, but she highly amused me. There was no way I couldn’t laugh at her. She was just too funny to me. From her expressions to the way she talked, she almost always made me crack up.
I walked out of her room and down the hall to mine, knowing she was following me. I sighed when I opened the wooden door to my room, seeing the dim room instantly get lighter the minute I’d switched the light on. I smiled and walked in, so happy to be back in my own room.
I walked over to my all too familiar wooden dresser and opened the top drawer, getting a pair of panties out, and then shut it, opening my pajama drawer and grabbing my blue Happy Bunny pajama bottoms and a light blue cami. I pushed that drawer shut, and then took off my tank top, not caring about Brooke watching. My bra came off next, and I flung it onto the floor, missing the pink laundry basket by a mile, so to speak, and shrugged, sliding my cami over my head. I pulled it down, covering my stomach, and then got out of my jeans and thong, replacing it with my panties and pajama bottoms. I sighed, pulling the sunglasses from the top of my head and folding them, placing them down on my dresser, grabbing my hairbrush right afterwards. I ran the brush through my hair quickly, and then I dropped it down carelessly, sighing.
”Thank god for home. I hate sleeping in hotel rooms.”
”I know. But you’re going to have to do it again soon, won’t you?”
I grimaced, knowing she was right. I had a match coming up this next week, so I’d be leaving in just a matter of a day, again. I had already contemplated no-showing, but I had to. I couldn’t let my newly united team down. Not in this match, not with our new target in my hands. There was no way I could let that opportunity pass me by.
”Yeah, this week versus Kelly Morgan.”
”You mean the crazy chick?”
”Yeah…we sort of jumped her, and shit hit the fan. Let’s put it that way.”
She had caught on to the “we” in the sentence. I sighed, knowing this would be a whole new can of worms. Although hopefully it would be enough to make her want to come back. I knew it better than anyone else that I did much better with Brooke at my side than I did alone, or with a team. Brooke was a big part of my career…I almost depended on her to put me over to the crowds.
She gave me a sharp glance, and I smiled at her, which pretty much screamed ‘guilty as charged’ to her. I was met with skeptical glare, and fidgeted nervously, waiting for her outburst. I knew I had it coming. She was never open about me being in teams without her. It was a control issue she had.
”Who’s this ‘we’ in the first place?”
”Sprit Fire, Lauren “Darkness” Brooks, Rebecca Phoenix, and me. Don’t worry, it’s running smoothly. We’re achieving our goal. We’ve chosen our target, now we’re just going in for the kill. It won’t be long before Kelly goes running to her mommy, and what we really want comes into play.”
”So, this is about power!? ANISSA! DO YOU KNOW YOU’RE IN OVER YOUR HEAD!?”
I sighed and shook my head, clearly disagreeing with her. She crossed her arms, her sharp glare getting worse by the second. I knew she was holding back from lashing out at me and trying to verbally reprimand me. It was obvious that was what she’d wanted to do from the start.
”Kelly is an easy target. We took her down no problem in the hallway. I knocked her out simply. If I can do that in heels, I think I can take her where I’m really prepared, in-ring. Don’t doubt me Brookie. You know what I’m capable of.”
”I know. Just don’t get into something you can’t handle. I mean it.”
I nodded at her, and she sighed, shaking her head.
”I don’t know what I was thinking letting you out to handle your own career. I swear it’s almost like I need to come back and keep your ass out of trouble.”
A small twinkle shined in my eye, and I smiled at her. I’d done what I wanted to. I made her want to come back. A small part of me wanted to jump up and down in victory, but I knew she’d have to think about it first. I wouldn’t jump the gun and immediately think she’d return. I’d just have to wait around and find out.
”Well…think about it. Maybe I do need you around.”
”Maybe…my ass maybe.”
Her sarcastic little grin made me giggle, and I sat down onto the bed, her following me. I had a lot of catching up to do in the real world, since I’d been avoiding it for quite some time.
